The mine, operating under various names like Wheal Martha, Great Wheal Martha, New Wheal Martha, and eventually New Consols, exploited a complex lode containing copper, arsenic, silver, wolfram, tin, and pyrite intermittently over several years. In 1946, shortly after World War II, an effort was made to reopen the mine in Luckett, near Callington, Cornwall. Despite setbacks and the involvement of Sir Arthur Russell as an advisor for a brief period, the venture ultimately failed, and the mine was abandoned in 1952.
