Tregurtha Downs and Owen Vean setts were combined and operated as Wheal Union in 1883. However, the high expenses associated with this venture led to its swift closure. Sold as a going concern in 1885, it was then operated as Tregurtha Downs by a new company. In 1991, the mine was sold at auction and briefly renamed Wheal Helena, only to revert to Tregurtha Downs the following year.
From 1895 to 1899, the mine remained idle, but there was an unsuccessful attempt at revival in 1899 by Tregurtha Downs Consolidated Mines Ltd. Eventually, the mine closed in 1902, but it was later reworked as part of Wh Hampton in the early 1900s.
