Adjacent to the Carnon River is the Bread & Cheese Shaft, situated right where the former Redruth & Chacewater railway crossed the river. It appears that the shaft was upgraded with a concrete collar, likely during the late 1960s or early 1970s, possibly in conjunction with the development of the Wheal Jane and Mount Wellington mines.
Initially operated as part of the Nangiles Mine. Hamilton Jenkin documented that in 1808, they operated under the name Nangiles and Bread & Cheese Mine. The engine house ruin, located at the western edge of the Nangiles Mine area, marks the coordinates.
Whilst on CRoW land, the mine is owned by the Tregothnan Estate who request that people stay well away from all mine workings, which are well signed and generally fenced.
