The iron ore was discovered within the Coal Measures and also in vertical joints in the Pennant Sandstone, where it exhibited an unusually high metallic iron content—often exceeding 50%. This is notable, as it is rare for iron ore to be found in the Pennant Sandstone. In this case, the ore filled vertical joints, staining the surrounding rock a vivid red.

Today, quarrying at Mine Train Quarry has cut through two of the original levels, and only the most northerly remains open. This surviving level consists of approximately 100 feet of very narrow passages forming a three-dimensional maze, although these passages are no longer accessible. Some sections were temporarily re-opened during quarrying activity in March 1995 but were subsequently covered again. In April 1997, two further entrances were uncovered

1908-1930 Thomas R. Stopford

Owned by Mr Stopford of Macclesfield, though it was worked by local miners on his behalf. Between 1906 and 1932, the site yielded around 3,500 tons of haematite.

Located in Barnhill Plantation, to the south-west of the Speech House.
