The mine was sunk in 1911 by Crumlin Valley Collieries Ltd. There was issues in the shaft throughout the early years of the mines life, with frequent work stoppages as men refused to go down the unsafe shafts.

In 1913 they struck their first coal seam, the black vein. Both shafts were around 300 feet deep.

Black,
Lower three quarter,
Meadow,
Old,
Big,

Production hovered between 120-250,000 tons per year.

The mine closed in 1959 when it was replaced by the New mine. The shafts were filled in 1965 and the workings were abandoned.
