Small and ancient tin mine located in the western area of the Ding Dong sett. It had been operational as early as 1714 but had been abandoned well before 1814 when Ding Dong Mine resumed operations. Ding Dong Mine itself comprised an older, shallower section alongside a deeper, currently active part, connected by an underground gallery. To the west of this older section lies an even more ancient mine, Huel Malkin, which had been completely abandoned for many years. Wheal Malkin, part of Huel Malkin, operated on the western section of Malkin Lode, a significant lode running east-northeast in the Ding Dong sett. In the 1850s, as the eastern part of Ding Dong Mine became depleted, attention turned to the western areas, leading to the sinking of Greenburrow Shaft in the old Wheal Malkin section. This shaft’s engine house remains a prominent landmark, overseeing the valley to the west. The passage also mentions the unique occurrence of tin found in veins of fluorite within this mine, as noted by Carne in 1822, which is distinctive in this mining district.
