Numerous old dumps blanket the area, remnants of early bell pit workings and later levels driven from lower down the fellside. Material on these dumps indicates that the veins in this area primarily consisted of galena accompanied by banded brown Baryte. This Baryte, when cut and polished, bears a resemblance to Derbyshire ‘Oakstone’. Crystalline Baryte is scarce, but occasionally forms small yet sharp brown elongated crystals, sometimes found alongside transparent sprays of hemimorphite. Pyromorphite, though rare, has been observed on one or two of the dumps.
