The large abandoned china clay pit is located west of Bugle village, bordered to the south by the road between Roche and Stenalees. It expanded over the 20th century, absorbing smaller china clay works such as Old Beam clay works, Imperial Goonbarrow, East Goonbarrow, West Goonbarrow, North Goonbarrow, Caudledown, Cleaves, South Caudledown, and Rock Hill clay works. The pit also contains zones of tin and tungsten mineralization, with tin being mined prior to the establishment of the china clay operations. One notable older tin mine within the area is Old Beam Mine.
