The mine opened around 1857, with a correspondent of the Mining Journal noting the display of ‘splendid’ specimens of copper ore, leading him to believe in the existence of a rich deposit at a shallow depth. In October 1857, reports indicated that 20 tons of ore were raised from a depth of less than 12 feet.

In 1858, a shaft was sunk approximately 600 feet from the original discovery, but failed to encounter significant ore values. Despite some additional surface work on the back of the lode, little ore was raised, with only 8 tons recorded in June 1859. By the end of 1859, work had virtually ceased, and the equipment was put up for sale in 1861.
