Inscriptions in mines and quarries

@Quarryman - John Barnatt did consider units when he first looked into the Dunsley Springs numbers, and IIRC he concluded they were yards, though only roughly- I'll have a look at what we both wrote about it.

@Les Riley - I know the grafitti you're describing (and the adjacent bit where there's a crude drawing of the bit of anatomy he was interested in...) but I don't have a photo, JB probably does.

Have you worked out what unit of measurement they were using? There is a sequence of numbers along the length of the same workings those tallies are in I posted yesterday which increase by 20, starting at the remotest point and rising towards the entrance. It looks like the measurement was in poles (AKA rods or perches) the highest number is 140. This one is 80, both in chalk on the wall and soot on the roof.View attachment 823
Makes a lot of sense as that's multiples of a surveyor's chain (each soot/chalk mark at 5 chains)

You should be able to upload images up to 2M to the forum. I'm sure there would be a warning if images we too large.

Alternativelly, if the images are available online (maybe via a share on dropbox/drive etc), just paste urls into the editor and the forum should automatically show the image.

I'm surpised. Its at the far end of alpha passage, or maybe beta. Its easy to miss as you can see by the photo.
I used to be in there a lot a few years ago. Photos were my thing, sometimes it would take me half an hour to set one up. Happy days. We are slowly loosing everyhting.
