It is with great sadness that I have to report that John, who posted on here, was found dead at his home on Saturday morning. I have no other details at this time.
That really is sad news. I didn't know John well but I've had various dealings with him over the years. As well as being very knowledgeable about geology he had a deep interest in meteorology.
I believe that he was author of several books, but I know him best as designer of the large interpretation board at Cwmsymlog. he was an expert minerologist and I see his knowledge in the descrption of the important silver bearing mineral tetrahedrite.
And with Wales section in this splendid tome https://data.jncc.gov.uk/data/b007d...f/gcr-v36-mineralization-england-wales-c5.pdf (the entirety of which is available online) . I beleive he did a fair bit of work on mineralisation and setting that into a regional context in non mined areas - such as the Friog Undercliff at Fairbourne.
He put me onto the flourspar mineralisation at Cwellyn Mine a few years ago, and getting to that was a bit of an obsession last year - access to which is extremely tricky.
